CANAL WINCHESTER -- Two people have come forward claiming to be the biological
mother and father of a baby found abandoned 13 days ago in Canal Winchester.
Fairfield County Sheriff Dave Phalen said DNA samples have been taken from the
couple and have been sent to the Bureau of Criminal Identification &
Investigation in Columbus for testing.
"We aren't releasing the names of anybody until we can confirm whether or not
they are the child's parents," Phalen said.
The child, a full-term baby with the umbilical cord still attached, was
discovered April 18 in a hallway by a resident of Winchester Arms Apartments,
134 N. High St., Canal Winchester. The infant boy was about six hours old and
weighed 3.5 pounds when found.
"The child is very well. I was able to hold him, and he is a beautiful baby,"
said Doris Calloway Moore, spokeswoman for Franklin County Children Services.
"If it turns out to be her child, we are going to start an investigation on her
and see what her circumstances were," Moore said. The investigation would
include why the woman gave up her child and whether or not she can take care of
the child.
Moore said the investigation into the man's and woman's claims would take some
time if the DNA proves they are the child's parents.
"At this time, the mother is saying she doesn't want the child put up for
adoption," Moore said. "We are just going to have to look at all the
circumstances surrounding the mother and why she left the child."

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail . . . but, a true friend will
be sitting next to you saying, "Damn . . . that was fun!"
