"The Visual Arts Program of the San Diego Public Library is proud to host
'Maids & the Magdalene Laundries,' a visually stunning and thought-provoking
exhibition by one of San Diego's most skilled and socially aware artists,
Cheryl Parry.

Long inspired by important issues such as the environment and the work of
Rachel Carson, Parry now musters her creative forces to focus on one of the
most shocking and, until recent years, hidden chapters in the history of the
Catholic Church in Ireland. Between 1850 and 1996, tens of thousands of
girls and women fell victim to the excessively puritanical, Church-dominated
mores of the times. Judged unfit to live in Irish society for infractions
as minor as being too pretty or flirting, they were banished to the
convent-run Magdalene Laundries where many of them endured a life-time of
isolation, enslavement, and suffering. Known as Magdalenes, some were never
heard from again and were only recently rediscovered buried together in
unmarked graves.

Parry approaches her subjects, not as a sensationalist, but as an empathetic
spirit and commentator. Through an ambitious and sensitive series of works
that includes classically rendered paintings, assemblages of objects,
performance, and text, 'Maids & the Magdalene Laundries' subtly and
poetically explores the worlds of fantasy Parry believes the Magdalenes were
compelled to create in order to escape and transcend their harsh working
conditions and physical and mental abuse.

Parry is a gifted and versatile artist whose work offers beauty and
enlightenment. 'Maids & the Magdalene Laundries' promises to be a sobering,
yet uplifting, viewing experience." - M. Lugo

Dh and I are tentatively planning on going there next Friday afternoon to view
it quickly before heading down to old Mexico... However, we are ones to change
our plans on a moments notice if something better comes up. Sobetter plan to
go without us.. , in the event that we can't make it.

I'm going to call too, and verify the details, times, etc. I will report back.
:)
