Hi

Can anyone offer any practical advice? My mum was adopted in 1944. I have
her birth mothers name and birth certificate. We have registered with NORCAP
and a few of the web adoption sites. Her birth mother will be in her 80's
now. Is there an easy way of tracing her or finding out if she is still
alive?

Any help appreciated

OK, first off this is not really a search group neither is it a support
group, and of course like most things on the internet it's supposed to be
international but its mostly Americans here. I just happen to be English and
an experienced searcher (if you are a member of Norcap, see contact leader
sheet).

Can you tell me, via e-mail her birthmother's place and date of birth and
names and if she was married at the time of your mother's birth and where
she lived at the time? It may be possible to find out a few things, it
depends a lot on whether she has an unusual or a very common name.
Eventually you are probably going to have to either going to have to go to
the FRC in Islington or use the pay for use website at
http://www.1837online.com to do a bit of research in the birth, marriage and
death indexes. If she wasn't married at the time, you'd first of all want
find out if she married and who to.

Actually you can also research the birth marriage and death indexes on
microfiche at various libraries and county and borough record offices around
the country. One such library is in Guildhall Square, Portsmouth tel 023
9281 9311.
