We live in a pretty small community. The main hosptial and the
connected-to- the-hospital rehab facility both made errors in treating
my elderly mother. These places are the best places in town, believe
it or not. I would like to sue them, but my husband says that if we
do that, they will not let her ever go into the rehab faciility again
if she gets sick in the future. They have to let you into the
hospital if you come in an ambulance, but they sure don't have to let
you into the connected rehab facility ("No room".) There is some
likelihood that she will fall again or have another heart attack.
There aren't many choices about where else to take her. Has anybody
else had an experience like this to let us know if it is true or not?

Doreen,

The best answer to your questions will come from a local lawyer who
specializes in medical malpractice. Look in the phone book. Be sure to ask
if the first consult is free. I doubt that your family will be refused
service because of a legal dispute. I'm not sure what you can sue for in
court. It sounds as if your mother would have to sue.

Good luck,
Dave M.

Since she said it is a "pretty small community", I wonder if there are
enough local lawyers to find one that "specializes" in medical malpractice.
Another thing worries me. Maybe local lawyers would not be too keen on
antagonizing important people in the community like the ones who support and
run the local hospital. Would perhaps a better plan be to find a lawyer in a
nearby city having a larger population?
