92% of Russian Women Fall Foul of Foreigners
Created: 15.04.2004 11:33 MSK (GMT +3), Updated: 14:51 MSK

Ninety-two percent of women who leave Russia for jobs abroad are victimized by
those who have invited them, Yelena Mizulina, the head of an inter-departmental
group working on a bill against human trafficking, said at a press conference.

She said 48% of children who leave Russia are also victimized, the Rosbalt news
agency reported. Mizulina said most women who leave for jobs abroad do so
believing that the jobs will last a few months and will be very well paid. But
when they get to the supposed job site, their papers are taken and they are
forced into prostitution.

“Usually, it’s women with relatives who are victimized, since if the women
refuse to cooperate, their relatives can be threatened,” Mizulina said.

The exploitation concerns not only women seeking work abroad, but children
supposedly taken in for adoption.

“Children who are sold are usually taken out of Russia for supposed
adoptions,” Mizulina told Rosbalt, “but then their organs are sold or they
are forced into prostitution.”

TP: Okay...I'm havin' a huge problem with this one. Sounds too
much like an alarmist manifesto.
