Adams DA charges teen mom

BRIGHTON - A 19-year-old woman was charged Tuesday with attempted first-degree
murder for allegedly abandoning her newborn in a closet last month while she
visited relatives in Colorado Springs.

The Adams County district attorney also charged Jessica Maes with a misdemeanor
count of child abuse for knowingly and recklessly exposing the newborn to
injury. Maes, who was ordered to return for her preliminary hearing June 15,
was allowed to remain free on a $25,000 bond.

Maes is the mother of two other children under 3 years old.

Maes' uncle told Adams County sheriff's deputies that he and his girlfriend
found the infant in a bedroom closet.

Relatives told deputies the young woman had denied she was pregnant. She
eventually told a Colorado Springs police officer that she thought the baby was
stillborn, according to court documents.
