Apparently Cindy was clinically depressed.. Had been for a while.. And I am sure Susan Burns knew this.. She is a licensed psychologist and she supposedly got to know Cindy.. She got to know the family situation as well.. The son helped Cindy take care of the baby before she handed it over.. I did a search on adoption.com last nite for 'Susan Burns'.. In 2002 she was looking for aparents who had advertised for a baby over the net. She did this in order to write another book.. Make more money.. Help this new way of adopting along.. http://forums.adoption.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78663 The adoption we are discussing was done over the net.. A tribute to Cindy... http://lifemothers.com/cindyjordan.html Jackie
If Susan did know it, then she may have closed the adoption as a way
of protecting Malia. She may also have hoped that it would help Cindy
gain some distance from the situation. And, frankly, she may have
underestimated the possessive of a new mother of a young baby -- both
in herself and in Cindy.
I read one post on adoption dot com that indicated that the eldest son
had been caring for the baby -- including feeds and diapers -- before
relinquishment. Cindy probably had no choice if she was so depressed,
but it would strongly suggest that the boy would have bonded with the
baby. And possibly Susan thought that that relationship, too, was too
close to be healthy for a young man who was supposed to be building
his own future and a child who would live too far away for frequent
visits.
It's a very sad situation. But the situation was already a difficult
one, I think.
