'I always knew I was a triplet but we were parted at birth'
(Filed: 09/04/2004)

Helena Minter, 71, remembers "shaking like a jelly" when she received a
telephone call three years ago which reunited her with her triplet brother and
sister after 69 years.

"I always knew I was a triplet," she said. "But my mother died the day after
she gave birth to us and we were all adopted separately. My brother went to
Yorkshire, I was raised in London and my sister was brought up in Devon."

The triplets were born in 1932 in Sevenoaks, Kent. The oldest was Florence, now
Gillian, followed by John, now David, and then May, now Helena.

David and Gillian found each other 25 years ago and had been looking for Helena
ever since. But they found it hard to believe that despite having a right to
their own birth records, they had no right to their triplet sister's adoption
records.

Pam Hodgkins, founder of Norcap, an adoption support group, mentioned that
there was the option of an application to the High Court, which was granted.
Initially it was feared that the Registrar General might appeal against the
order, for fear of any precedent being set. But he did not and information
about Helena was sent to Pam. The details were of her name and address and her
parents' names in 1934.

However, using public and church records, the current identity and location of
Helena was established within five days. Pam visited Helena and admits to being
extremely nervous. She said: "Helena was 69 and I didn't know whether she even
knew she had been adopted."

Helena, a widower with two daughters and a son, decided to send a letter to her
brother and sister and the trio finally met at midday on June 29, 2001. She
said yesterday: "It has been absolutely wonderful to be reunited with David and
Gill. Gill and I are very, very close. I suppose it is a girls' thing. We are
not identical in looks but we are completely alike."

Pam said: "It has opened up a new life for her and a relationship which she
never thought she would have with her triplet brother and sister. It has given
her such joy."
